Gerunds #3

Hello, guys!

Another interesting lesson I learned today in my English class was about gerunds. I learned that a gerund is the -ing form of a verb that functions as a noun in a sentence.

Examples of gerunds:

- swimming

- reading

- walking

- painting

- running

Here are ways on how to use gerunds in sentences:

Gerunds as Subjects:

- Swimming is a great way to stay fit.

- Reading improves your vocabulary.

- Traveling broadens your perspective.

Gerunds as Objects:

- I enjoy listening to music.

- She dislikes waking up early.

- They finished painting the house.

Gerunds after Prepositions:

- He is good at drawing.

- They talked about moving to a new city.

- She apologized for being late.

Gerunds in compound nouns:

- Swimming pool.

- Driving license.

- Running shoes.

Note: Gerunds are not the same as present participles, which are used in continuous tenses.

CONVERSATION 1:

Emma: Waiting for food in long lines can be frustrating sometimes.

Jake: I agree. Choosing a meal quickly is sometimes hard for me.

Emma: Sharing food with friends makes lunch more enjoyable, though.

Jake: That’s true. Planning meals ahead of time could save us time.

Emma: You’re right. Cooking at home is healthier, too.

Jake: For me, buying food here is more convenient.

Emma: By the way, trying the spaghetti today might be a good idea.

Jake: That’s true. Ordering dessert afterward could be nice as well.

CONVERSATION 2:

Choose the gerund in the following conversation. Color them red.:

Scenario: Two friends talking about their hobbies

John: Hey, Sarah! I heard you’ve started painting recently. How is it going?

Sarah: It’s amazing! Painting helps me relax after work. What about you?

John: I’ve been enjoying jogging in the mornings. It’s refreshing.

Sarah: That sounds great! I’ve always loved jogging, too. Do you listen to music while jogging?

John: Sometimes, but I prefer listening to podcasts. Learning new things while exercising is fun.

Sarah: I agree! Learning keeps the mind sharp. Have you tried cooking new recipes lately?

John: Yes! Cooking is my new passion. It’s so rewarding to create delicious meals.

Sarah: That’s wonderful! I think cooking and painting make life more colorful, don’t you?
